Faculty, staff must scan UTSA PCs for SSNs

(June 21, 2007)--The UTSA Office of Information Technology (OIT) has instituted a program to help faculty and staff members find files containing Social Security Number (SSN) and credit card number (CCN) information.
The program is driven by a UT System directive that requires all faculty and staff members to reduce the usage and collection of SSNs by Sept. 1, 2007. Files that contain SSNs are prime targets for hackers who use them in identity theft schemes.

According to UTSA information security analyst Lance Pritchard, "Many professors and staff members may unknowingly have files on their PCs or their servers that contain SSNs. In fact, we have already heard from some staff members who didn't realize that they had this information on their computer."
OIT has automatically transmitted (or "pushed") a software tool to most UTSA desktops. However, because there are several PC configurations, not all desktops were received the push.
The software application, SenfNet, was developed by UT Austin. Find instructions for installing SenfNet at the UTSA Information Technology Web site. If you do not find the SenfNet icon on your desktop, you can download it from the Web site.
