Mexico Center cohosts Cinemate Latin Film series

(Sept. 24, 2007)--The UTSA Mexico Center, UTSA Hispanic Student Association and the Instituto de Mexico will present "Bajo California: El Limite del Tiempo" by Mexican filmmaker Carlos Bolado as the latest installment of the Cinémate Latin Film Series, Sept. 27-28 at the UTSA 1604 Campus and the Instituto de Mexico.

The free screenings of Bolado's 1998 film are 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the University Center Retama Auditorium (2.02.02), UTSA 1604 Campus, and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Instituto de Mexico, 600 HemisFair Plaza.

The 96-minute film follows a modern Los Angelean making a spiritual journey into the mountains of Baja California. It is a story of rediscovery and attachment to the native land. Bolado will introduce both screenings and will lead discussions after each showing.

"Bajo California" won numerous accolades including a National Film Critics award at the Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival, best film at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival and six Silver Ariels (second-place, Mexican academy awards).

This Cinémate screening also will include Guillermo Arriaga's 2000 short, "Rogelio." The five-minute film looks into Mexico's cultural beliefs on death and how society's consumerism and sexual obsession spill over into the after-life.

The UTSA Mexico Center will showcase a Latin film each month this fall. Sponsorship of the film series continues the center's mission of opening cultural dialogues between Mexico and the United States.
