Surgical robot expert speaks at alumni breakfast

By Marcia Mattingly
UTSA Office of Alumni Programs

(Sept. 28, 2007)--The UTSA Alumni Association presents surgical robotics pioneer Naveen Kella, M.D., as speaker at the next Connections Breakfast at 7:15 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the Marriott Northwest hotel, Loop 410 at Interstate 10. Kella will speak on "Surgery from Home: The Future of Robotics in Medicine."

With his talk, Kella will share film footage of next-generation robotics in action. As one of the nation's most experienced robotic surgeons, he completes at least 25 robotic procedures each month. Patients from around the world travel to San Antonio seeking his expertise.

The first generation of surgical robots already is installed in a number of operating rooms around the world. Although they aren't autonomous robots performing surgery on their own, they lend a mechanical helping hand to surgeons.

Kella did his undergraduate work at Stanford University and earned a medical degree at University of Texas Southwestern Medical, Dallas. His residency was at Tufts New England Medicine Center, Boston. He and his wife live in San Antonio.

Open to all, Connections Breakfasts are excellent opportunities to reacquaint with UTSA alumni and meet community leaders. Corporate table sponsorships are greatly appreciated.

Tickets are $20 for UTSA Alumni Association members and UTSA students, $25 for non-members. Breakfast is served at 7:45 a.m., and the program begins at 8 a.m.

For more information on sponsorships or to make a reservation, visit the UTSA Alumni Programs Web site, e-mail alumni@utsa.edu or call (210) 458-4133.
