Valero Energy program provides scholarships

By Jana Kennelly
Associate Director of Development, Office of Student Affairs

(Dec. 18, 2007)--The UTSA Inclusion and Community Engagement Center and Valero Energy Corp. began a new program this fall -- Valero Volunteer University. The program is a great opportunity to give back to the community and to get to know professionals at Valero.

Valero is committed to promoting a spirit of service throughout the communities they serve, and the Valero Volunteer Council identified UTSA as a source for partnership through volunteerism.

UTSA undergraduate students with a 2.25 G.P.A. or higher (3.0 for graduate students) can volunteer at Valero Volunteer events. Students can join the Leadership Track by completing 8 hours of service with Valero each semester.

Students who reach the Leadership Track service requirement will be eligible for $2,500 in scholarships and other awards. The student organization that contributes the most hours in the program period will be awarded $500 for the charity of their choice or to fund a campus-wide activity.

Valero Volunteer events include the Valero MS 150 Bike to the Beach, Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl For Kid's Sake, as well as many other events throughout the community.

For more information, contact the UTSA Inclusion and Community Engagement Center at (210) 458-4770 or visit the Valero Volunteer University Web site.
