UTSA $3.1 million library renovation begins soon

By Jan Kemp
Assistant Dean for Public Services, UTSA Library

(Aug. 29, 2008)--A $3.1 million renovation of the John Peace Library at the UTSA 1604 Campus will begin in September. The project includes an update of the John Peace Library Building second floor, the entrance level of the library. The renovation will make the library a more functional, attractive place to study and conduct research. The six-month project is expected to last from September 2008 through March 2009. The facility will remain open 24/5 throughout the renovation, and all services will continue to be available.

Teaching and learning have changed dramatically at UTSA since the JPL Building opened in 1976, and this renovation will update library facilities to support the needs of current and future students and faculty. The Bommarito Group, space planners and designers, worked with the library staff in 2006 to prepare the UTSA Library Space Study.

The first goal of the study was "to position the library so as to be more relevant to the entire campus. We would like to see it integrated into campus life, academics and student lives. We would also like to see it connect publicly and meaningfully with the academic programs on campus."

The second-floor renovation will feature updated lighting and ceilings, comfortable seating, colorful paint and fabrics, new computers and improved space for studying. The furnishings will incorporate colors of orange and blue, and will include outlets for laptops, a room where students can practice class presentations and flexible spaces for students to work in groups or individually.

A variety of new lighting and ceiling treatments will brighten workspaces and public areas. Display cases in the second-floor vestibule provide a preview of fabric samples and paint colors, photos of furniture selections and floor plans.

The first phase of the project took place in mid-August with the addition of 950 new study chairs throughout the library.
