Volunteers needed for Oct. 4 hospital project
By Jennifer Lilly

(Sept. 30, 2008)--Volunteers are needed Saturday, Oct. 4 for Days of Caring, a United Way project including State Employee Charitable Campaign agencies. Days of Caring involves businesses throughout the San Antonio area working together on various volunteer efforts.
- La Prensa Foundation is newest member of UTSA Lone Star Society
- UTSA alumna Jordan Kaufmann wins $50K for new stent-graft start-up
- UTSA begins new way-finding sign installation this summer at Main Campus
- USA Today: UTSA long jumper Tyler Williamson rescues three-year-old boy
UTSA faculty, staff and students can volunteer at the San Antonio State Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 4. This Days of Caring project involves restoring the hospital cemetery and beginning a research project to locate family members who may not be aware their love ones are buried there. At this time, the hospital is in need of volunteers to help reset the original headstones.
The San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) is one of 10 state mental health facilities within the Texas Department of State Health Services system. SASH provides intensive in-patient diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitative and referral services for seriously mentally ill persons from South Texas regardless of their financial status.
Historically, patients admitted to SASH had little family support. From 1892 to 1924, those who died at the facility were buried on the hospital grounds. Recently the ongoing project, Labor of Love, was launched not only to rehabilitate the cemetery, but also to initiate the research project to locate family members.
Volunteers will receive a Days of Caring t-shirt and a carpool will be coordinated from the UTSA campuses if needed. SASH is at 6711 S. New Braunfels, Suite 100, San Antonio, Texas 78223.
