(Oct. 22, 2008)--U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) and U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-Texas) were on the UTSA 1604 Campus Oct. 21 to encourage voter participation.

UTSA's Student Government Association (SGA) hosted the congressmen as part of its student get-out-the-vote efforts. The representatives spoke to a crowd on the paseo outside the University Center.

Kennedy is serving his seventh term in Congress. He is the son of Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) and the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy. He represents the First District of Rhode Island.

Rodriguez, whose 23rd Congressional District includes the 1604 Campus, serves with Kennedy on the House Appropriations Committee.

Both Congressmen discussed the impact young voters can have on this election.

"I was impressed with how Congressman Kennedy emphasized the importance of young people and how we can make a difference," said UTSA senior Sarah Garcia.

Nicole Munoz, a sophomore international business major, took a break between classes to hear what the representatives had to say.

"UTSA is becoming a different university -- it's becoming more of a four-year, non-commuter university and students need to realize that," said Munoz. "The fact that Congressmen Kennedy and Rodriguez are listening to what we have to say is great and shows we've come a long way."

Their visit comes on the second day of early voting. Bexar County registered voters can vote through Oct. 31 at the 1604 Campus Main Building ground floor.
