UTSA holiday safety tips: trees, lights, heaters
(Dec. 5, 2008)--It's that time of year again, and the holiday season calls for several reminders regarding safety at UTSA.
We all can help make this a safe holiday season.

Holiday safety tips
- If you decide to put up a real tree at home, be sure to keep it in a water stand and make sure it is sprayed with fire retardant. (View a recipe for making your live tree at home more fire safe.)
- Wreathes and trees using real evergreens are not allowed on the UTSA campuses.
- If an artificial tree is set up, make sure it is made of fire-resistant material.
- Be sure all decorative lighting is made with UL-rated lights; all lights must be turned off at the end of the day.
- Electrical cords are not to pass under a door where they could get pinched and possibly cause a short. In all cases, electric extension cords are not acceptable; use only outlet strips with built-in surge protectors. Do not "gang" power strips (plugging one strip into another).
- Personal space heaters must have an automatic shut-off sensor switch in case it is turned over.
- Candles are not allowed at UTSA unless the wicks are removed. No lighted candles, please!
