Free tickets: Try new VIA bus to Northwest Vista

By James Strahan
Parking and Transportation Services Manager

(Dec. 4, 2008)--UTSA students, faculty and staff have a new way to travel between the 1604 Campus and Northwest Vista College. To promote the new VIA Metropolitan Transit bus route between the two schools, there is a limited supply of free tickets for UTSA students, faculty and staff.

The free-ride tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at UTSA Fiscal Services offices in the John Peace Library Building and Multidisciplinary Studies Building on the 1604 Campus and the Frio Street Building on the Downtown Campus.

In November, VIA introduced new route 660, which provides an easy and inexpensive way to get to and from UTSA and the quickly developing far west and northwest areas of San Antonio.

"With the price of gas fluctuating as it is and increasing congestion on the roadways, citizens are looking for inexpensive options to help their commute situation," said Priscilla Ingle, VIA vice president of public affairs. "VIA is pleased to offer these new routes for students and employees of UTSA."

UTSA students, faculty and staff also can continue to ride routes 93 and 94 for free by showing their UTSACard. Routes 93 and 94 travel between the UTSA Downtown and 1604 campuses.

Route 660 runs Monday through Saturday and offers convenient stops at the major intersections and retail centers along Loop 1604. At Northwest Vista College, the route continues to the VIA Ingram Transit Center as route 620 -- another new route introduced by VIA.

UTSA students can ride all VIA bus routes for just $12.50 per month with a VIA student discounted monthly pass. However, the best buy for students is the VIA Semester Pass. Spring passes will be available in January 2009 for just $35 per semester.
