UTSA hosts Southwest Guitar Festival, Feb. 4-8

(Jan. 30, 2009)--Thirty-five of the world's top student guitarists will compete for $10,000 in prizes when the UTSA Department of Music hosts the Southwest Guitar Festival Feb. 4-8. The largest acoustic guitar festival in the United States also offers an array of concerts by some of the best international acoustic guitar performers.

Preliminary rounds begin at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4. At 7:30 p.m., the opening concert is in the UTSA Arts Building Recital Hall featuring the world premiere of "Triqueta for Guitar, Horn and Chamber Orchestra." The original piece composed by UTSA Professor James Scott Balentine will be performed by UTSA Assistant Professor Matthew Dunne and conducted by UTSA Associate Professor Eugene Dowdy.

At 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 5, Bosnian guitarist Denis Azabagic, winner of 11 international competitions, will take the stage in the UTSA Recital Hall. At 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6 in the Majestic Theatre, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and the San Antonio Symphony team up for the world premiere performance of Sergio Assad's "Interchange for Guitar Quartet and Orchestra."

The student competition closes at 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7 with the International Competition Finals at Travis Park United Methodist Church. The festival's final concert at 3:15 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 8 will feature a recital by Brazilians Sergio Assad and Odair Assad, a duo that has captivated audiences around the world for decades.

Presented by the UTSA Department of Music, the Southwest Guitar Festival is co-sponsored by Arts! San Antonio, City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs, San Antonio Chamber Music Society and the San Antonio Symphony.
