(Feb. 10, 2009)--On your marks! UTSA students, faculty and staff are invited to form teams or race individually in the 25th anniversary run of the UTSA Alumni Diploma Dash 5K San Antonio City Championship Race and Fitness Walk. The event is Saturday, Feb. 21 on the 1604 Campus with registration and check-in at 8 a.m. and the starting gun at 9 a.m.
The race benefits the UTSA Alumni Scholarship Fund, UTSA track athletes, and alumni programs and services. In a morning of family-friendly fitness, fun and prizes, the course offers a certified 5K flat course for accomplished runners and a scenic 1.5-mile course for walkers who prefer an easier pace.
>> Race registration is $25 for those registering online through midnight Feb. 18 ($35 on race day). UTSA students can enter before or at the event for $10; register at the Office of Alumni Programs, University Center Room 2.00.10, 1604 Campus, or at the UTSA Diploma Dash Web site.
Medals and prizes will be awarded in open, masters and 13 age categories. Groups are welcome to compete in the Corporate Team Challenge, UTSA Student Team Challenge or ROTC Team Challenge. Prizes awarded for record-breaking times, male and female. Special divisions include Clydesdale (male, 190 pounds and up) and Filly (female, 140 pounds and up). New this year is the wheelchair division with first-, second- and third-place medals given to men and women.
Major community sponsors are Valero Energy Corp., H-E-B Grocery Co., Capital Group Companies, Run Wild Sports, San Antonio Federal Credit Union, The Sciano Family, Southwest Business Corp./Employee Benefits Consulting Group and AccuPrint.
Corporate partners and teams include Frost, KCI, Lawrence L. Garcia Associates, Wordyisms, Tri-Sition Area, Joeris General Contractors, Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Law Office of Patrick Filyk, The Sabinal Group, RVK Architects and San Antonio Police Department.
