Academy for Teacher Excellence hosts open house

(March 23, 2009)--The UTSA College of Education and Human Development's Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) will host its first open house from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 24 at the Main Building ground floor lobby on the 1604 Campus. Free and open to the public, the event is an opportunity for UTSA students, faculty, staff and community members to learn about ATE programs and services and how they impact students, UTSA and the San Antonio community.

This open house is part of the UTSA Provost's Core Values Initiative, fostering the UTSA core values of integrity, excellence, inclusiveness, respect, collaboration and innovation.

In addition to UTSA community members, students, faculty and staff were invited to the event representing area community colleges, independent school districts and business partners.

The Academy for Teacher Excellence was established as hub for school districts, community colleges and UTSA to collaboratively research, design, implement and evaluate educational programs that address emerging, statewide and local educational issues associated with a growing diverse student population.

A major focus of the program is the implementation of a Title V Hispanic-serving-institutions grant utilizing community resources to better prepare teachers. The project will guide the preparation of more than 300 teachers who will demonstrate the attitudes, knowledge and skills of a "culturally efficacious teacher."
