UTSA hosts Texas grad school information event

By Tim Brownlee
Assistant Director of Public Affairs

(March 18, 2009)--The UTSA Graduate School will host the Lone Star Graduate Diversity Colloquium March 27-28 at the University Center on the 1604 Campus. Established in 2006 as part of the statewide Closing the Gaps initiative, the goal is to help Texas' first-generation college students and those from under-represented groups to attend graduate school and complete graduate studies in Texas.

The colloquium runs noon-7 p.m., Friday, March 27 and 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m., Saturday, March 28; a graduate school information fair is 1-3 p.m. March 28.

A collective effort of colleges and universities from across Texas, the event will include workshops and an information fair with representatives from graduate schools and academic departments. Students will receive valuable information to help them be more competitive as grad school applicants. Additionally, Texas graduate schools can recruit students from the diverse group of prospects attending the event.

There will be workshops on applying to graduate school, preparing for entrance exams, funding for graduate school and the value of undergraduate research. Previous colloquiums were at Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin and Texas Tech University.

>> Registration for the event is $10 for students and student advisers. (Registration for graduate school recruiters is $100 per recruiter.) See the schedule of activities and workshops and download a registration form at the Lone Star Graduate Diversity Colloquium Web site. The registration fee covers pre-events, meals, workshops and activities.
