
McNair Scholars Program hosts open house

(March 24, 2009)--UTSA students, faculty and staff can learn about the McNair Scholars Program at an open house from 8 to 10 a.m., Friday, March 27 in Multidisciplinary Studies Building Room 1.10.14 on the UTSA Main Campus. Refreshments will be available.

At the open house, attendees can speak with program representatives about doctoral degrees. The McNair program provides opportunities for research and other activities geared toward preparation for doctoral study.
Activities in the McNair program include working with faculty mentors, a 10-week full-time summer research experience, writing and presenting theoretical research papers, opportunities to present research at professional conferences, and monitoring of academic performance and provisional tutoring when necessary. The program also assists participants in securing admission and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs.
The program provides:
- $2,400 stipend for meeting specific milestones
- Ten-week UTSA Summer Research Institute
- Financial assistance for on-campus room and board on a case-by-case basis during the summer institute
- GRE preparation, faculty mentorship, tutorial referrals
- Assistance with graduate school applications
- Academic advising by graduate students and faculty
- Intensive faculty-led research activities
- Travel assistance for presentations at research symposiums
The McNair Scholars Program is accepting applications from sophomores and juniors. Information and applications are available at the McNair Scholars Web site. The application deadline is April 1.
Created under the Higher Education Amendments of 1986, the McNair Scholars Program was named in honor of Ronald E. McNair, an African-American engineer, scientist and astronaut who perished in the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.
