(Oct. 26, 2009)--Roxanne Henkin, professor of interdisciplinary learning and teaching in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development, is the recipient of the 2009 Halle Award for Outstanding Middle Level Educator by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

The Halle Award honors a junior high or middle-level educator who has worked to promote understanding of the developmental needs and characteristics of young adolescents, especially in English language arts. The award will be presented in November at the annual NCTE conference.

"I am honored to receive this award as a true recognition of the work I have done in the field of literacy," said Henkin.

A "middle-level educator" is defined as anyone who has worked to improve schools and schooling for the middle-level teacher, principal, university staff, curriculum specialist or supervisor.

The criteria for nominees are:

  • Encouraging a spirit of inquiry and development of critical and creative thinking within the profession
  • Showing evidence of exemplary professional involvement through workshops, association programs and projects and connecting the classroom with the community
  • Fostering the development of literacy education and promoting research on the middle level student

Henkin, who joined UTSA in 2003, serves as co-editor of Voices from the Middle, which is published by NCTE. She directs the San Antonio Writing Project, which promotes writing to classroom teaches by sharing their expertise with other teachers in the community. Before joining UTSA, Henkin was a professor at National-Louis University in Chicago. She has spent 37 years in education, 18 of those years as a classroom teacher and curriculum instructor.
