UTSA College of Sciences accepts entries for Sept. 30 research conference

(June 16, 2011)--The UTSA College of Sciences is accepting abstracts until Friday, Aug. 26 for the 2011 Research Conference. The event will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30 at the University Center on the Main Campus.

The daylong event with the theme "From Basic to Translational Research: Promoting Interdisciplinary Collaboration in the Sciences" will feature faculty presentations, poster presentation sessions, exhibitor booths and a competition for student presentations.

Doug Frantz, UTSA assistant professor of chemistry, will deliver the keynote address. His talk, "Drug Discovery in Academia: Should We Jump In?," will explore the potential for universities to participate in the process of developing medicinal drugs.

UTSA students and faculty as well as researchers at institutions throughout the region are encouraged to submit abstracts in the following thematic areas:

  • Computational neuroscience
  • Energy and environmental science
  • High-performance computing and cyber security
  • Infectious disease
  • Medicinal chemistry
  • Nanotechnology
  • Stem cells and development

Abstracts submitted will be reviewed for oral presentations by the chairs of the thematic sessions. Students who present posters and oral presentations will be eligible to compete for awards.
