(Sept. 18, 2014) -- The UTSA Faculty Center will present education pioneer Freeman Hrabowski as its fall signature speaker at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25 in the Main Building Auditorium (0.104) on the Main Campus. The event is free and open to UTSA students, faculty and staff.

Named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME (2012) and one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report (2008), Hrabowski's research and many publications focus on science and math education with a special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He recently was named by President Obama to chair the newly created President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African-Americans.

A child-leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Hrabowski was prominently featured in Spike Lee's 1997 documentary, "Four Little Girls," about the racially motivated bombing in 1963 of Birmingham's Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

Born in 1950 in Birmingham, Ala., Hrabowski graduated at age 19 from Hampton Institute with highest honors in mathematics. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he received his M.A. (mathematics) and four years later his Ph.D. (higher education administration/statistics) at age 24.

"Students in our educational leadership program will benefit greatly from interacting with inspiring and visionary leaders," said Bruce Barnett, chair of the UTSA Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education and Human Development. "Learning how underrepresented groups are achieving success in the STEM fields will provide them with ideas for promoting student success in their own organizations."

Hrabowski's leadership and vision are integral to many programs worldwide and are used by universities, school systems and community groups around the country. His talk at the TED 2013 national conference has been watched online by more than 690,000 viewers.

Before the UTSA talk, faculty members are invited to the Faculty Center Fall Mixer at 5 p.m. in the John Peace Library Assembly Room (4.04.22) for an exclusive opportunity to meet Hrabowski.
