(Sept. 19, 2014) -- UTSA joins hundreds of universities from around the United States to celebrate the inaugural National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week. The commemoration is this week, coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.

UTSA is one of 370 HSIs in the United States and one of 68 in Texas. According to AnneMarie Nuñez, HSI researcher and associate professor in the UTSA College of Education and Human Development, HSIs have doubled in number in the last 20 years and are the largest group of Minority-Serving Institutions.

"The Presidential Proclamation of National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week brings important recognition to HSIs and their role in achieving important postsecondary goals," Nuñez said.

As of fall 2013, 48 percent of UTSA undergraduate students and 47 percent of graduate students were Hispanic. Additionally, UTSA was on Hispanic Network magazine's Best of the Best list for 2014, and was listed among the best engineering (No. 5) and business (No. 10) graduate programs by HispanicBusiness.

This year, UTSA was ranked No. 7 in the nation for the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students by the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's annual report. The report also ranked five of UTSA's undergraduate degree programs as among the best in the nation.

In order to become an HSI, a college or university must be an accredited, degree-granting, not-for-profit institution with a full-time, Hispanic undergraduate student enrollment of at least 25 percent.

"A week devoted to recognizing HSIs is a way of calling our attention to UTSA, and nationally to the collective responsibilities of those colleges and universities that serve Hispanic populations," said Rosalind Horowitz, professor in the College of Education and Human Development. "These institutions largely seek educational equity and opportunity, and serve as a model for other minority groups that have not yet entered or completed higher education."
