UTSA Latino Heritage Banquet will showcase poetry, cuisine, leadership
(Sept. 18, 2014) -- As part of Latino Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15, the UTSA Student Center for Community Engagement and Inclusion will host the Latino Heritage Banquet at 6 p.m., Oct. 16.
The lineup for this year's UTSA Latino Heritage Banquet includes a student tribute performance to Tejano singer and Texas native Selena, a keynote and performance by Houston poet and educator Lupe Mendez, dinner inspired by Latino cuisine, presentation of the Outstanding Latino/a Student Leadership Award and a dance. Tickets are available at Roadrunner Express ($10 for UTSA students, $15 for non-students).
Since March, a UTSA committee of student leaders has been planning the event and identified themes and performances to showcase at the banquet with the theme "Labeled by the Past. Leading the Present. Defining our Future."
"I am Colombian, so I love to talk about my culture whenever I can," said business management major Paula Celis. "Being a Latina woman in the U.S. lets me represent a good image of how each of our cultures are authentic and unique. To be Latina or Latino means to be proud, authentic, diverse and most important, to never forget where you come from."
"Being a Latina isn't something you know, it's something you feel -- with our traditions, music, food and most importantly, our family," said Susana Mancera, a Mexican-American psychology major. "One thing I learned from my family when I was a little girl is to be proud of who you are and where you come from."
