UTSA is one of most Military Friendly Schools in United States
(Oct. 14, 2014) -- The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has been designated a 2015 Military Friendly School by Victory Media Inc for the fifth consecutive year. The 2015 Military Friendly School list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools across the country that are doing the most to embrace the nation's military service members and student veterans.
The institutions on the 2015 list have shown a commitment to the recruitment of students with military experience by offering scholarships, discounts, military credit, veterans organizations and full-time staff dedicated to assisting veteran and military-affiliated students.
UTSA provides numerous and varied resources for its student veterans, active duty military and their dependents including comprehensive counseling services, specialized tutoring, life-skills assistance, a first-class ROTC program, a career center that is well-trained in assisting student veterans, student veterans networking opportunities, annual veteran and military recognition events, and financial assistance.
The UTSA Veteran Services Advisory Committee (VSAC), established in 2011, is comprised of veterans and supporters from across the university community. The committee actively oversees the coordination and enrichment of the university's services for student veterans while advising UTSA's president about veteran-related issues.
"UTSA is constantly working to refine and enrich the quality services it offers its veteran and active-duty military students and their families," said Lisa Firmin, UTSA associate provost for faculty and student diversity, VSAC co-chair and retired U.S. Air Force colonel. "The university values the important and unique perspectives of each of its military-affiliated students. Our mission is to assist these students in making as seamless a transition as possible from military service to our academic community here at UTSA."
UTSA's approach to supporting student veterans was a featured case study in the book "Building Bridges for Student Success: A Sourcebook for College and Universities," published by the Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange at the University of Oklahoma in 2013. UTSA's support of student veterans also was featured as an example of excellence at the American Association for Hispanics in Higher Education annual workshop in 2013.
"UTSA and the Student Veterans Association are dedicated to assisting fellow veterans, active duty military, and dependents in their intellectual and professional endeavors," said Amanda Tuck, public relations officer for the UTSA Student Veterans Association. "We seek to provide a network of advocacy, resources and support for these students by promoting a sense of community and camaraderie facilitated by organized events and philanthropy."
The Military Friendly Schools designation is awarded to the premier, trusted resource for post-military success. The Military Friendly organization provides service members transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.
The methodology used for making the Military Friendly Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape to one that is much more transparent and has played a significant role over the last six years in capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country.
The survey captures more than 50 leading practices in supporting military students and is available free of charge to more than 8,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 G.I. Bill Funding. The school survey, methodology, criteria and weightings are developed with the assistance of an independent Academic Advisory Board comprised of educators from schools across the country.
The survey is administered at no charge and is open to all post-secondary schools. View criteria for consideration on the Military Friendly website and a complete list of schools by using the Schools Matchmaker tool on the G.I. Jobs website.
Victory Media is a service-disabled, veteran-owned business serving the military community since 2001. Its data-driven lists are published in G.I. Jobs, Military Spouse, and Vetrepreneur media channels, republished in periodicals such as USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Fortune and Bloomberg BW, and frequently cited on national TV by NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, CNBC, Fox News and others.
