(Sept. 15, 2014) -- On Thursday, Sept. 18, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will welcome representatives from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) when it hosts the 2014 Taking the Pentagon to the People Technical Assistance Training conference at the Main Campus. The conference, organized by the DoD's Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity (ODMEO), will allow Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the greater San Antonio area to network with DoD representatives and better understand how the agency can support their recruitment, teaching and research activities.

ODMEO officials are eager to collaborate with minority-serving colleges and universities on federally sponsored programs. Through its Taking the Pentagon to the People Initiative, DoD representatives will gather information for and provide advice to the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness about how to strengthen MSIs, HSIs and HBCUs. Targeted collaboration areas include enhancing institutional infrastructure, and facilitating planning, development and the use of new technologies to ensure long-term viability and enhancement of minority-serving institutions as significant DoD resources.

"True innovation and leadership requires diverse partnerships between academia and government," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo. "This conference will enhance our STEM-based teaching and research programs and cultivate relationships with our students and diverse communities."

At this week's conference, attendees will share valuable information on STEM research and development, human capital programs and workforce development activities. The DoD will also engage participants in discussions on how to enhance existing partnerships for infrastructure, sustainability, grants and contracts, and civilian career opportunities.

The conference will serve as a conduit to provide technical assistance to MSIs, HSIs and HBCUs that want to assess potential partnership areas such as pipeline development, STEM and technical assistance needs.

"The Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity sustains the goals of exposing minority institutions, their students and high school youth to business and career opportunities within DoD," said Clarence A. Johnson, ODMEO director. "These events help to strategically address the low participation of women and minorities in the senior civilian and military grades and ranks, and demonstrate support for Presidential Executive Orders that strengthen the infrastructure of minority institutions."
