UTSA students attend VotoLatino Power Summit at Downtown Campus
(Sept. 23, 2014) -- The UTSA Student Leadership Center sent 12 students to the VotoLatino Power Summit hosted by UTSA at the Downtown Campus earlier this month. The summit provided students from the San Antonio area with workshops on topics such as advocacy, leadership and technology.
"VotoLatino was an eye-opening experience for me," said Susana Mancera, senior psychology major. "I never knew how much passion and work Latinos were actually putting in through such organizations to get the Latino community out there to vote and make their voice be heard. The guest speakers were such inspirations in how they're trying to make a change and ways I can help. Voto Latino reminded me that not only should I strive to be great, but to also create change within my Latino community."
The conference started Friday night with a reception hosted at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures, where students met VotoLatino Artist Coalition Co-Chair Actor Wilmer Valderrama and VotoLatino President and CEO María Teresa Kumar. Students interacted with the various speakers and presenters for Saturday's workshops.
On Saturday, students were treated to an opening panel featuring Texas state Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Wilmer Valderamma and Lalo Alcaraz, writer for the FOX TV show "Bordertown." Students then participated in morning workshops to help develop their leadership, advocacy, media and technology skills. The afternoon panel featured award-winning actress Rosario Dawson, U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro and former International Secretary Eliseo Medina. The panel challenged students in attendance to register to vote and encourage their family friends to vote as well.
The Power Summit concluded with a celebration where students mingled with participants, speakers and VIP guests.
