Roadrunner volunteers give back at San Antonio Food Bank project
(Oct. 17, 2014) -- Roadrunners Give Back, the official UTSA Homecoming service project, was recently hosted at the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB), which provides food and grocery products to more than 500 partner agencies in 16 counties throughout Southwest Texas. SAFB fights hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education and advocacy.
This year, 90 volunteers (alumni, students and staff) helped assemble 12,000 boxes consisting of 36,000 pounds of donated food and provided 28,125 meals to senior citizens. The service project was accomplished in less than the projected two hours.
The volunteers helped clean, reflect about their project with the facilitator and grew to understand better the SAFB motto, "Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope." The volunteers chanted these words with passion and commitment as they proceeded to make a difference in the community.
Members of the Volunteer Organization Involving Community Education and Service (VOICES), Roadrunner Productions, Black Health Professions Organization, residents of the Leadership and Service Floor, and fraternity and sorority life members were among the volunteers.
"As a Roadrunner, it is so nice to see faculty, staff, students and alumni come together under one common goal," said Larriel Shaw, a UTSA junior studying sociology and psychology with a minor in chemistry. "I've done this project before, and it truly gets better every time. I'm happy to have volunteered with something so valuable and precious. The feeling to be a part of something larger than me for the greater good for the San Antonio community is amazing."
