Dear Friends,

With Veterans Day approaching, it's a great time to recognize UTSA's military families and the commitment of the university to serving those who serve our country. Almost 3,000 UTSA students are veterans, veterans' dependents or active duty military personnel. Nearly 350 other veterans are among UTSA's faculty and staff.

With this deep connection to the military, it should come as no surprise that UTSA is No. 1 in the number of students it certifies for military educational benefits. That means UTSA serves more students with military connections than any other public, four-year university in Texas.

This year alone, veterans and their dependents will receive $10 million in tuition exemptions at UTSA through the Hazlewood Act, one of the highest levels of assistance in the nation. UTSA's VetSuccess program, Student Veterans Association, Veteran Services Advisory Group, and UTSA Center for the Wellness of Military Children & Families are all dedicated to helping veterans get the most out of their educational experience at UTSA.

UTSA's commitment to the military can be found both in our classrooms and laboratories. Our researchers are conducting pioneering studies in biomedicine, infectious diseases, blast injuries, cybersecurity and other areas of military interest. UTSA also has two of the most active Army and Air Force ROTC programs in Texas, producing leaders for the future.

UTSA's outreach to veterans is recognized across the country. We have been designated as one of the nation's top Military Friendly Schools five consecutive times by G.I. Jobs, and Military Advanced Education has designated UTSA a Top School in its 2015 Guide to Colleges & Universities.

Last month, the Department of the Army presented me with its Outstanding Civilian Service medal. I proudly accepted on behalf of the university and all of those who work so hard to support our student veterans.

For almost 100 years, America has set aside Nov. 11 as a day to honor veterans and remember their sacrifice. I am proud that, every day, UTSA makes veterans a top priority.

Go 'Runners!
