UTSA hosts Nov. 13 lecture by Mexican research director Agustin Escobar
(Nov. 10, 2014) --The UTSA Mexico Center and Office of International Programs will host a presentation by Agustín Escobar on Mexico's social policy system. The presentation, free and open to the public, will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 13 in Frio Street Building Riklin Auditorium (1.402) at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
Escobar, general director of the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS), is a top-level member of the Mexican National Researchers System and the Mexican Academy of Science.
Elected to the board of the Mexican National Policy Evaluation Council in 2006 and 2010, Escobar has produced numerous academic publications in Mexico and abroad. He recently led a large group of researchers on a binational study of Mexico–U.S. migration.
In his presentation, "Improving Mexican Social Policy from Academia," Escobar will discuss advances in the Mexican government's system for evaluation and improvement of its social policies and how other countries have learned from Mexico's experience. He will explain how the system works, what we can learn from it and what challenges remain.
"Dr. Escobar is a leading expert on Mexican government policy and its implications for Mexico and its neighbors," said Harriett Romo, a professor of sociology in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts and director of the UTSA Mexico Center. "His experience and insights will be invaluable as UTSA expands its outreach and cross-cultural ties to Mexico and other nations in Latin America."
