UTSA For The Kids Dance Marathon presents $70K to UTHSCSA oncology unit
(Nov. 11, 2014) -- UTSA student organization and nonprofit For The Kids (FTK) Dance Marathon has presented the UT Health Science Center San Antonio with $70,000 in proceeds to support the families of local children battling cancer. The UTSA students raised the money earlier this year by hosting a 12-hour, high-energy dance marathon.
FTK fundraises year-round and, since 2007, has raised more than $130,000 for the families of children battling cancer. In addition to raising money, FTK students regularly spend time with the children at the hospital. The FTK-UT Health Science Center partnership also raises awareness of the emotional and financial struggles of San Antonio families who are fighting childhood cancer.
FTK’s gift will help families with costs that are not covered by their insurance. Sample purchases include gas cards for transport to and from the hospital for treatment, walking assistance devices and grocery store gift cards.
On average, 12,500 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer each year. Although survival rates for many childhood cancers have improved dramatically over the past few decades, cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease in children.
