(Nov. 4, 2014) -- The UTSA student chapter of the Mexican American Engineers and Scientists recently was honored with three awards at the 40th annual MAES National Symposium in San Diego.

MAES is a diverse organization aimed at not only helping students advance their educational and professional careers, but also creating a sense of "familia" and belonging at UTSA. This year's theme, "Once in MAES, Always Familia!" was designed to reunite past and current members.

The event featured more than 35 schools from across the country, and the UTSA MAES student chapter was represented with 13 delegates.

UTSA MAES received the Outreach Award for its service to UTSA and the San Antonio community. MAES member David Yanes was honored with an award for his outstanding grade point average. Chapter President Lillian Martinez received the top MAES award, the Lockheed Martinez Madrina Scholarship. The scholarship entitles Martinez to have a "padrino" for life, a professional who becomes a mentor and guide for the awardee's career.

The symposium allowed the students to participate in workshops covering leadership, resume writing, and professional development. Workshops were led by professionals from several high-profile companies including Lockheed Martin and ExxonMobil. Students also participated in a college decathlon, where teams engaged in 10 sub-competitions.

"I am so privileged that UTSA MAES was able to participate and that we were given the opportunity to expand our horizons and opportunities," said MAES member Eric Reyna.
