UTSA VOICES to host Oxfam Hunger Banquet on Nov. 19
(Nov. 13, 2014) -- The UTSA community is invited to attend the Oxfam Hunger Banquet from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19 in the University Center Denman Room (2.01.28) on the Main Campus. The banquet is an educational dining experience to learn about hunger issues and how to be a voice for those who experience hunger. One in nine people (842 million) worldwide suffer from chronic hunger.
The student organization Volunteers Involving Community Education and Service (VOICES) is hosting the banquet for the 15th year.
The first 100 banquet participants will draw a ticket at random, assigning them to an income level (high, middle or low) based on statistics of the number of people living in poverty. All three levels will have a corresponding meal and seating arrangement. Guests are invited to share comments about the experience and their understanding of poverty and hunger in the world.
The guest speaker will be UTSA alumnus Doug Ewers '14, food and drive coordinator for the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB). The food bank aims to collect 1 million pounds of nonperishable food in November. Those attending the hunger banquet can bring canned food to donate to the food bank.
Oxfam is an international confederation of organizations in more than 90 countries that works to build a future free of injustice and poverty. Based on the belief that respect for human rights will help lift people out of poverty, the organization is a community of ordinary people with the extraordinary vision to have a world without hunger.
