UTSA names Samuel Gonzales interim vice president for business affairs
(Nov. 17, 2014) -- University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) President Ricardo Romo has announced the appointment of Samuel Gonzales as interim vice president for business affairs effective Jan. 17, 2015. Gonzales will also continue in his capacity as UTSA vice president for student affairs. Kerry Kennedy, the current vice president for business affairs, will retire Jan. 16.
Earlier this fall semester, Romo established a committee to conduct a national search for a permanent vice president for business affairs. Provost John Frederick will chair the search committee.
As interim vice president for business affairs, Gonzales will oversee six divisions -- Administration, Facilities, Financial Affairs, Human Resources, University Police and UT Share-PeopleSoft -- which include a total of 31 departments.
"With nearly four decades of service to UTSA, Sam brings a wealth of leadership experience to this position," said Romo. "He has a strong understanding of the importance of providing an excellent learning environment and business operations to help support student success. I am grateful that Sam has agreed to serve in this interim role while we conduct a search for a permanent vice president."
Gonzales joined UTSA in 1976 and has held numerous leadership positions, including associate vice president for student affairs administration and student services, director of financial aid and director of career services. He oversaw significant initiatives including the financing and construction of intramural and football practice fields; completion of the newest residence facility, Alvarez Hall; development of an enrollment management and recruitment strategy; and streamlining of Student Affairs operations and services. In addition he has served as president of national and local professional associations and as treasurer of the Southwest Association of Colleges and Employers.
Kennedy has served as vice president at UTSA since August 2004 and has been instrumental in leading the Business Affairs organization to better position UTSA for its Tier One aspirations. From 1990 to 2003, he was assistant vice chancellor & controller and executive vice chancellor for business affairs with the University of Texas System. Previously, he was vice president for business affairs at the University of Alabama.
