Browning selected as Purdue Distinguished Women Scholar
(Jan. 26, 2015) -- JoAnn Browning, dean of the College of Engineering at UTSA, has been selected as a Purdue University Distinguished Women Scholar for 2015-2016.
“Congratulations to Dean Browning on this recognition of her achievements,” said John Frederick, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at UTSA. “We are proud to have such an accomplished and well-regarded scholar leading the college. She is a terrific role model for all our engineering students.”
Before joining UTSA, Browning served as the associate dean of administration and professor of civil engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas. Her career at KU included service on the University Senate, as a member of the Campus Historic Preservation Board and Bay View Alliance KU Leadership Group, among numerous department, college and university committees. She twice was awarded the university’s Miller Award for Distinguished Professional Service (2004 and 2011) and was the 2012 recipient of the Henry E. Gould Award for Distinguished Service to Undergraduate Education.
“It is an honor for me to have been selected as a Distinguished Women Scholar from Purdue University,” Browning said. “I owe a great deal to my advisor and professors at Purdue, and so it is very gratifying to know that the Institution will honor my work as a reflection of what I learned during my time in West Lafayette.”
According to the Purdue University website, “the awards program, led by Purdue’s Office of the Provost in partnership with Purdue University’s Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence, honors alumnae who earned a Purdue doctorate and have made significant scholarly contributions to their academic communities.” The program was launched in 2011, and this year will mark the fifth annual award ceremony. The 2015-2016 reception will be held on the Purdue campus on March 9.
Browning earned her Ph.D. in civil engineering from Purdue University.
