(June 8, 2015) -- A crowd of more than 300 turned out to attend a parent engagement summit held recently at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
Parents and students received in-depth information about how high school course work can lead to a future career. Faculty and staff representing the Alamo Colleges provided valuable information about two-year degrees, certifications, and business and industry expectations.
Additional presentations focused on four of the House Bill 5 Career Pathways: STEM, Business and Industry, Public Service and Arts and Humanities.
Representatives from the UTSA College of Public Policy, UTSA College of Business and UTSA Departments of Social Work, Anthropology and Archaeology provided information about careers requiring undergraduate and graduate degrees. A St. Mary’s University representative also spoke about the paths to law school.
Business and industry panelists included the San Antonio Greater of Chamber of Commerce and Southwest Research Institute. Parents visited a Community Resource Fair, which included exhibitors from BiblioTech, P-16 Plus, the San Antonio Youth Commission, Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP), Café College and many more. Gail L. Hathaway of Workforce Solutions, Alamo was the keynote speaker and discussed the workforce needs of our region.
The event was hosted by the UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives, UTSA Academy for Teacher Excellence Alamo Colleges, Education Service Center (ESC) Region 20, Boerne ISD, Communities in Schools and St. Mary’s University.
The UTSA Office of P-20 Initiatives provides the community access to information regarding the pathway to pursue a postsecondary education. The summit was successful in not only providing valuable information to families from Bexar County and beyond, but also in showcasing what a collaborative effort between community members, colleges and universities could accomplish.
