New student opportunities available through Virtual Career Expo

New student opportunities available through Virtual Career Expo

MARCH 5, 2020  — UTSA is collaborating with fellow UT System institutions to bring students an online career expo like never before. Students at all partnering institutions will have the opportunity to virtually network with employers from across the nation.

Other partnering institutions include UT Austin, UT Health San Antonio, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Permian Basin, UT Rio Grande Valley, UT Dallas and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

This event will be the first time that universities across the UT System work together in hosting a recruiting-networking event. The University Career Center initiated this collaboration with the idea of creating a recruitment opportunity for students across Texas. Mario Vela, career center executive director, and Regina Gomez, interim assistant director of employer relations, connected with career services offices across the UT System to develop the experience.

“The purpose of leading the UT System Virtual Career Expo is driven by UTSA’s Classroom to Career initiative,” Vela said. “At this virtual expo, students will have the ability to expand their career networks and explore a variety of industry roles they may have not been exposed to. This expo will allow UTSA to create new partnerships with national organizations and continue to grow our relationship with current partners.”

If you have a contact at an organization that you believe should be recruiting at this event, email Mario Vela.
For more details about the career expo visit Virtual Career Expo.

Students can prepare for the expo by reviewing the attending employers prior to the event and preparing to interact with employers through a chat rather than a face-to-face interaction like they would at a traditional career fair.

Students should review at what time each employer will be online to ensure that they will be in the expo while that particular employer is online. Once a student has connected with an employer in the general chat, employers can invite particular students to a private chat where they can ask more specific questions about a student’s experience and qualifications.

Students can also prepare for the expo by reviewing their résumé and using the University Career Center’s résumé templates, uploading their résumé to VMock for instantaneous feedback or by stopping by the University Career Center’s drop-in hours every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m.
