Faculty Support GSLA TwitterGSLA Facebook

In 2011-2012, we served 2700 graduate students at UTSA through in-class workshops, academic coaching, thesis/dissertation group, and Writing Institute. Our program is a national model for other professionals in learning assistance, from across the country, who want to expand their services to assist graduate students in being successful.

We encourage faculty to utilize our programs by putting a reference to our services on your course syllabus or making announcements in class about our services and programs.

Below is a short paragraph to include in your syllabus:

Graduate Student Learning Assistance at the Tomás Rivera Center (TRC) provides one-on-one Academic Coaching which can assist with many academic concerns, such as pre-writing strategies, overcoming writing blocks, managing time, and developing graduate-level reading, note taking, and study skills.  To schedule an Academic Coaching appointment at either the Main Campus or the Downtown Campus, call 210-458-4694 or email gsla@utsa.edu.  Other services include a workshop series, Thesis/Dissertation Group, Writing Institute, and online resources.  Visit the TRC website (www.utsa.edu/trcss/gsla) and the UTSA Grad Assist page, available through Blackboard, for more information on any of these services.

Workshops

Additionally, we can schedule our staff to come to your class and present a workshop to your graduate course. Please note that we can tailor our workshops to meet your and your students' needs. Many faculty have utilized our services over the past six years (i.e., Business, Architecture, Education, English, Political Science, Social Work, Public Policy, Communication, History, Counseling, and Bicultural-Bilingual Studies). In 2011-2012, we presented 75 in-class workshops, reaching over 1000 students.

Student feedback:

  • Great presentation! I feel so much better about writing my paper. Thanks :)
  • Workshops during classes are especially convenient for grad students who already have very full schedules.
  • I think all incoming grad students should hear this lecture!
  • The presenters are always professional and enthusiastic. This is a very beneficial program for all grad students.
  • Most helpful part: being able to ask specific questions and having a person to answer them.

Student feedback on our APA workshop:

  • I wish everyone would have this in their first semester. … I feel that I am starting off on the right foot. I am much more familiar with APA than I was before. Thanks to a caring professor and professional like you who take time to put this together and share this information.
  • I thought I was solid on APA before this presentation and I was wrong. I learned a lot and a lot was refresher.
  • Best presentation of APA material I have seen in graduate classes so far.
  • The entire presentation was extremely important for me. It's going to help tremendously with my papers.
