In the last couple of years, The University of Texas at San Antonio has participated in a Summer Common Reading Program for all first-year students. This initiative allows our newest Roadrunners to build an academic and social community at UTSA, and provides an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful discussion with peers and colleagues. The entire UTSA community is welcome to read the book and participate in Summer Common Reading events.

The Summer Common Reading Program also allows students to:

  • Have an immediate university experience
  • Build reading and critical thinking skills
  • Hear the author of the book speak at Convocation

Expectations:

All first year students are required to read the book as part of their first-year experience by August 27th, 2012-the day of Convocation. On this day the author, Luis Alberto Urrea, will be the keynote speaker at Convocation and host a meet and greet event.

2008 and 2009- A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League  by Ron Suskind
