Taylor Waits and Moshood Adams, Ms. and Mr. UTSA 2017
(Oct. 21, 2017) -- UTSA students Moshood Adams and Taylor Waits were named Mr. and Ms. UTSA during the halftime show at the Homecoming football game on Oct 21. Sponsored by the UTSA Office of Student Activities and the UTSA Homecoming Committee, the award recognizes Roadrunners striving for the highest levels of academic achievement, campus involvement and community service.
Showcasing some of UTSA’s finest students, the 2017 Homecoming Court also included Joseph Del Rosario, Jeffrey Hooks, Asia Marshall and Jennifer Trevino.
Candidates competed in several categories including an application process, formal interview, a platform presentation and a student vote for the chance to be named Mr. and Ms. UTSA. While each member of the Homecoming Court would be a capable representative of the university, only two can claim the honor.
Adams hails from Houston (Alief), and is a psychology major with a business administration minor. He is active with VOICES and has served as the sophomore senator with the Student Government Association, volunteer coordinator with the African Student Association and council member for the Black Student Leadership Council. Moshood’s platform, Runner 2 Runner, focuses on connecting current UTSA students with alumni to create networking and mentorship opportunities.
Waits is also from Houston, majoring in communication studies with a minor in linguistics. She is a former Orientation Leader who currently serves as the president of the Black Student Leadership Council, Vice President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a UTSA Ambassador. Her platform focuses on providing financial literacy to UTSA students to help them manage finances and avoid student debt.
Adams and Waits will serve as the 2017-2018 Mr. and Ms. UTSA. Through the next year, they will represent the student body and the university at a number of special events and functions.

H-E-B Student Union Ballroom (HSU 1.104-1.106,) Main CampusA Linguistics Time Capsule that was buried in 2000 will be opened and shared. It contains the predictions of UTSA linguistics students as to how the language would change by January, 2025. Students and faculty who contributed will be invited to the opening to participate in sharing their predictions and discussing how accurate some predictions were.

If so, you’ve probably heard of predatory publishing. During this workshop, participants will discuss this pervasive problem in academic publishing and how to spot the red flags through real-life examples.
