(San Antonio, July 5, 2019) -- To make UTSA a more walkable and bike friendly campus, the UTSA Office of Sustainability has transformed an obsolete information booth on the Main Campus into a bike repair shop for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Tito Bradshaw was a well-known cyclist in the San Antonio community.
The Tito Bradshaw Bicycle Repair Shop is named after Tito Bradshaw, a well-known cyclist in the San Antonio community. Bradshaw owned a bicycle shop near downtown San Antonio, which served as a base for organizing group rides and events that became traditions in the city. On April 1, 2019, he was tragically struck by a car and killed while riding his bike.
“The naming is a way for us to develop sustainable programs and initiatives that enhance the student experience and duplicate Tito’s efforts—creating social spaces, community, neighborhood,” said Lani May, UTSA director of sustainability. “It speaks to UTSA’s vision to build campus spaces infused with neighborhood living where people feel they belong.”
As UTSA improves bicycling and pedestrian walkability, the Tito Bradshaw Bicycle Repair Shop memorializes the efforts of a strong advocate who created an active and organized community of cyclists in San Antonio.
“My friend embraced the role of a community leader and spokesman for the soul of San Antonio,” said Harley Smith, Bradshaw’s friend and business partner. “His passing was inconceivable and impacted his family, friends and fellow riders. It also brought attention to the reoccurring need to improve our infrastructure for the growing cyclist community in San Antonio. The only way to save lives is by sharing the road cautiously. Lani May and UTSA are taking the right steps toward keeping cyclists, pedestrians and drivers safe.”
Renaming the Information Booth to the Tito Bradshaw Bicycle Repair Shop is a symbol of the university’s strong commitment to increase student safety through the addition of bike lanes and sidewalks.
Located between the Ximenes Ave. Lot and Brackenridge Ave. Lot 1 on the UTSA Main Campus, The Tito Bradshaw Bicycle Repair Shop will open this fall. A grand opening celebration is planned for September.
The shop will house tubes, lubricants and an array of tools to allow students to make small repairs on their bikes. The space also will serve as a gathering spot for students and initiates the university’s campus master plan to develop a Paseo Verde, a green space for student activities, social gatherings and events.
Volunteers will gather on Wednesday, July 10 to build a trail leading up to the shop. They are encouraged to sign up for one or two hour shifts to help construct the 300-foot long multi-use trail. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. They need to bring gloves and sunscreen.

Group Spot B, John Peace LibraryEach fall and spring semester, students convene at the Main Campus at UTSA with booths, ideas and prototypes. A crowd of judges, local organizations, students, faculty and sponsors walk around and talk to the students about their projects and ask questions. Students get the real-life experience of "pitching" their project with hopes of getting funding or support to move to the next level.
