Dedicated staff member, military veteran, and avid runner gears up for UTSA Alumni Diploma Dash

FEBRUARY 23, 2024 — With a personal running career spanning more than four decades, Prescott “Scott” Kabrich, senior prospect researcher in the UTSA Office of the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement (VPAAE), has become a regular Roadrunner at the UTSA Alumni Diploma Dash 5K. Since 1997, Scott has laced up his tennis shoes each year to combine his personal passion for running with his professional commitment to enhancing the university’s community engagement and scholarship programs aimed at student success.

“I am so dedicated to Diploma Dash because I get to do what I love while also supporting the bright and determined students at our university,” shared Scott. “I also get to see Rowdy the Roadrunner at the finish line, which is always a great source of motivation for me!”

A United States Air Force veteran, Scott initially found a passion for running in 1973 during a remote tour in Turkey. He found himself regularly running alongside one of his fellow soldiers who was a former track and field athlete at The University of Texas at Austin.

Throughout his 24-year military career, Scott served in multiple locations across the globe. Following his assignment in Turkey, he participated in several notable military missions. His service included assignments such as aiding in the evacuation of refugees during Saigon’s fall in Vietnam, responding to the aftermath of the 1983 Marine Barracks Bombings in Beruit, and serving in Somalia during the Black Hawk Down incident.

After retiring from the military in 1996, Kabrich joined the staff of UTSA as an administrative assistant for the Alvarez College of Business. Over his 28-year tenure at the university, he has dedicated 25 years to supporting prospect research, data analytics, and fundraising in VPAAE.

On average, Scott runs 60 to 70 races annually for various charitable organizations including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, SNIPSA, the YMCA, and the United Way. In 2023 alone, Kabrich competed in nearly 80 races and has completed eight since January 2024. Having survived cancer twice, he donates his race medals each year to San Antonio’s CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital as symbols of courage and perseverance for young patients.

Known as “Scotty Dog” by hundreds of runners across the state, Scott chronicles all of his inspiring and unique race experiences on his website, Scotty Dog Reports.

“I hope my journey will serve as a reminder to all that no obstacle is impossible, and no challenge is too great to overcome,” shared Scott. “Throughout the uncertainties of life, we all must have the courage to continue moving forward and maintain our course, ‘for the long run.’”
