Leadership is an essential building block for the successful implementation of Lean Thinking. This course describes leadership behaviors critical to the successful implementation of Lean in any organization - public, private or non-profit, large or small. The course is applicable to all sectors including healthcare, banking, manufacturing, services and general office operations.

The course consists of one day (eight hours) of guided discussion of fundamental concepts and practical leadership skills found useful by leaders who have successfully led Lean implementation. In addition to guided discussions, the course uses exercises, case studies and simulations to reinforce learning outcomes.

Lean and Six Sigma, two methodologies evolved separately, share the same ultimate goal: answer voices of customers by achieving process excellence. While Lean is famous for its continuous pursuit of perfection, Six Sigma provides a structured data-driven methodology to achieve world-class operational capability. Integrating the two methodologies synergizes the improvement efforts for enhanced results.

This short course consists of two (2) days of lecture-based coverage of topics in Lean and Six Sigma, from fundamental concepts to practical skills and case studies. The training course consists of lectures, discussions, hands-on simulation games, video clips, and review quizzes.

The course consists of four days of lecture-based coverage of topics in Lean, Six-Sigma, and two days of individual hands-on, on-site project formulation and guidance resulting in significant operational savings and/or enhancement of product/service quality.

In order to ensure the learning effectiveness, each industry participant must be allowed (by his/her employer) to use at least 20% of his/her regular work time during the certification program period of time for completion the required project.

Each student participant must complete an improvement project at student’s employment site. The project is expected to produce significant impact of at least $50,000 savings and/or on service/product quality enhancements.

Course Outline

• Four days of intensive course coverage of Lean and Six Sigma related topics including tools, methodologies, change management, and daily practices.
• An aggregate of two days of individual monitoring and consultation sessions. Each participant must complete an improvement project at student’s employment site.
• Total program time span: 8-14 weeks (depending on actual progress made by student participants and support/cooperation from the sponsoring organizations)

Process improvement has become a necessity nowadays. Initiating an improvement project can be exciting and probably isn’t too difficult. But trying to sustain continuous improvement is a different story. This workshop introduces several useful mechanisms to help you drive the improvement efforts continually. The major subjects include lean thinking and continuous improvement, keys to eliminate operational wastes, managing Lean Six Sigma programs, and sustaining improvement continuously. In the workshop, we will review the key concepts, discuss about several cases, and exercise on practical skills. A self-assessment will follow after the workshop.

A self-assessment tool on maturity of Lean Six Sigma Continuous Improvement Management System will be offered to the workshop participants. The tool will assess the current status of the system being evaluated and suggests potential improvement ideas for the users to gain more strength in managing Lean Six Sigma implementation and continuous improvement programs.

Hung-da Wan (PhD) is an associate professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department, master’s program in Advanced Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering, and Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). His main teaching and research area are in Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence Methods. He is an active member of the IISE Operational Excellence Division. He obtained Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (2006) from Virginia Tech and MS in Industrial Engineering (1996) and BS in Mechanical Engineering (1994) from National Taiwan University.

Dr. F. Frank Chen is the Lutcher Brown Distinguished Chair in Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he also served as the Interim Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering (2006-2007) and founded CAMLS and served as the center director (2007-2015). Dr. Chen received the B.E. (Industrial Engineering) from Tunghai University (in Taiwan) and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His current research interests include cloud manufacturing, integration of Lean & Industry 4.0, lean tools and concepts for product development, healthcare, government/public sectors and R&D operations, design and operation of energy efficient buildings, intelligent manufacturing, and enterprise integration and transformation.

This interactive online workshop is designed to educate small business owners and their product and business development teams in early medical device development. Small businesses interested in entering the medical device market must understand the complex nuances of medical care, startup ventures, intellectual property, and medical device design controls. Offered at a level requiring no prerequisite knowledge, this workshop provides a series of value-added discussions prepared by experts, including veteran medical device engineers, clinical specialists, and successful inventors/entrepreneurs. The workshop contains interactive sessions wherein attendees will be given an innovative medical concept and will dictate parallel development timelines describing the technical development, intellectual property prosecution, and regulatory review initiation.

Instructor

Dr. Lyle Hood is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UTSA. He also has appointments in the Joint Graduate Program for Biomedical Engineering at UTSA and UT Health SA, Electrical and Computer Engineering at UTSA, and Emergency Medicine Department at UT Health SA. He received his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the joint program between Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He conducted his postdoctoral work at Houston Methodist Research Institute.

Dr. Hood’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, and Department of Defense, among others. His work has focused on medical device development, resulting in over thirty peer-reviewed articles on the topic from journals including Nature Communications, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, and the Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology. His patents have led to the spin-out of five startup companies. His expertise includes controlled drug delivery systems, airway management devices, medical fiber optics, and BioMEMS/NEMS technologies.

The flow of value streams is an important concept for Lean systems. When a system can flow smoothly, it typically performs more effectively and efficiently. However, a perfect flow is impossible in real world. Fortunately, many Lean Six Sigma techniques can help us improve the system’s performance as we pursue perfection. In this workshop, we will introduce relevant Lean Six Sigma concepts and practice on an important technique known as Value Stream Mapping (VSM). The mapping process allows us to evaluate the system’s current performance, identify issues and opportunities for improvement, and develop projection of improved state of the system. While the general procedure of VSM seem straightforward enough, some tasks may be confusing in practice, and the impact of VSM on team performance is often underestimated. Through this workshop, we hope to introduce some best practices of VSM implementation and share our useful tips with you.
