Librarians' Note: Gebhardt Mexican Foods Company had its beginnings in a small restaurant in New Braunfells, where Willie Gebhardt added a secret ingredient to his dishes. Mr. Gebhardt moved to San Antonio in 1890 and registered Eagle Brand Chili Powder in 1896. After receiving a meat license in 1911, the company expanded its product line to include items like tamales and chili. Over the next few decades, Gebhardt published several cookbooks entitled "Mexican Cookery for American Homes," three of which are pictured here (1932, 1943, and 1960). UTSA is also holds the Gebhardt Mexican Foods Company Records, 1896-1988. For more information check out these blog posts: Gebhardt Mexican Food Company Photos and Gebhardt's Chili Powder Co.
