Commencement always makes me think about both the collective accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff and the new opportunities our students will enjoy. Each of us in Student Affairs has contributed in some way to making this journey possible for our students and their families. It reminds me of the saying, "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts."

I see our appearance in the New Mexico Bowl in a similar light: it's both the culmination of so much hard work and also the beginning of a new chapter in the advancement of Roadrunner Nation.

As the bowl game approached, Roadrunner Nation spread out across Texas as Roadrunners made the 700+ mile trek to Albuquerque. It was wonderful to read the stories of Roadrunner reunions happening randomly in hotel lobbies and gas stations along the way.

Roadrunner Nation also spread out across social media channels. We saw creative and fun Instagram posts of Roadrunners on the way to Albuquerque, watched Facebook Live broadcasts of bowl week events and saw SOSA perform magnificently. Through it all, there was a feeling of being part of something new, special and bigger than yourself.

One of my favorite quotes was from a local San Antonio TV sports anchor who said, "UTSA may have lost the game, but they won the city."

So, as we enjoy the peace of the holidays, reflect on the achievements of 2016, and look forward to the promise of the New Year, it's also wonderful to experience the rise of Roadrunner Nation.

Best wishes,

Sam
