Texas Secretary of State Rolando B. Pablos ’94 will deliver the keynote address at the first spring Commencement ceremony. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. on May 12 and honors graduates from the College of Education and Human Development, College of Sciences and University College.
Born and raised in Mexico, Secretary Pablos earned his master’s in business administration from UTSA in 1994. Pablos has advocated with state lawmakers for UTSA be the principal university for cybersecurity knowledge in his push for Texas to be a nationwide leader in election security. While serving as chairman of the board for the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he was instrumental in advancing UTSA’s legislative priorities at the state Capitol including designating UTSA as an emerging research and discovery university.
On Saturday at 4 p.m., State Representative Ina Minjarez (District 124) will address students earning a degree from the College of Engineering and College of Liberal and Fine Arts.
Minjarez has played a key role in supporting UTSA in the state legislature. She was a proponent for the tuition revenue bonds that the Texas legislature approved to go toward UTSA’s new $95 million Science and Engineering Building. As a member of the House Select Committee on Cybersecurity, she advocated for UTSA to host a committee hearing scheduled for mid-May.
Students in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning, College of Business and College of Public Policy will hear remarks from Lorenzo Gomez, chairman and former CEO of Geekdom, at the Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 13 beginning at 2 p.m.
The San Antonio native has revolutionized the tech job ecosystem in downtown San Antonio, helping create hundreds of jobs and small businesses. He’s shown his support for the vision to reimagine the UTSA Downtown Campus, engaging in conversations throughout the community on launching innovative Downtown Campus programs that explore urban development and city-university partnerships. A known storyteller, entrepreneur and author, Gomez is sure to inspire graduates.
Spring 2018 graduates are advised to arrive two hours prior to their ceremony for check-in, located on the ground level of the Alamodome. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend. Graduates must leave purses and bags with family. All Roadrunners and their families and friends can share their Commencement experience on social media using #UTSA and #UTSAGrad18.
This spring’s graduating class will bring UTSA’s alumni network to 123,000 Roadrunners.
UTSA is recognized as one of the top five young universities in the nation by Times Higher Education.
