Every year, new UTSA students mark the start of their academic journey at Convocation.
(Aug. 20, 2018) -- Today, thousands of new Roadrunners will officially mark the beginning of their academic career at UTSA as they gather for Convocation. UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, faculty from all colleges and staff will come together to honor new students as they take their first steps in their higher education journey of discovery at UTSA.
The event takes place at 10 a.m. at the Convocation Center on the Main Campus. Doors will open at 9:30. All incoming freshman and transfer students are encouraged to attend. Students should plan to arrive early in order to get a seat. This year, due to the large incoming class, overflow seating and a simulcast of the ceremony will be available in the Recreation and Wellness Center.
This marks President Eighmy’s second year to address new students at Convocation. Provost Kimberly Andrews Espy, chemistry lecturer Hector Aguilar and Student Government Association President Brittany Garcia will also speak at the event. Students will also practice the Roadrunner Creed, UTSA Fight Song and UTSA Alma Mater.
Convocation is one of many Roadrunner Days events, a nine-day celebration that welcomes new and returning Roadrunners to UTSA. These activities, which run through the first week of classes, give incoming students the opportunity to learn about UTSA while making connections with faculty, staff and fellow students.
Immediately following Convocation, students will attend Explore Your Major, which takes place at various locations across both the Main and Downtown Campuses. These sessions will give students the opportunity to learn about the college where their intended major is housed.
Other Roadrunner Days events today include the Honors College Breakfast and the University Peer Mentorship (UPM) Experience – Meet Your Mentor Mixer. Students who enrolled in UMP 1000 this fall will meet their First-Year Experience (FYE) UMP Peer Mentor during this fun social event. The mentors will support and guide the new students academically and socially throughout their first year at UTSA.
The day concludes with the Midnight Light. In this popular tradition which takes place each fall, UTSA lights the front entrance Monuments at midnight. Students will pack the UTSA Oval for the event at 11:30 p.m. They’ll join The Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band (SOSA), fellow students, and faculty and staff for the celebration.
Students will need to check into all Roadrunner Days events using Event Pass on their mobile device. To do so, simply log in to RowdyLink, click on profile and download event pass using Apple Wallet, Google Play or screenshot. Saving the event pass makes checking into campus events quick and easy. In many cases, students will need their event pass or abc123 to get free swag, food and shirts at events.
