SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 — The UTSA Office of Civic and Community-Engaged Leadership is working with local organizations to host a nonpartisan voter education fair in advance of High School Voter Registration Week and National Voter Education Week. UTSA’s partners include newly launched, nonpartisan community organization Youth Do Vote, the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the San Antonio Area and the City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services.
The Youth Voter Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, in the Durango Building on the UTSA Downtown Campus. While the focus will be on encouraging high school and college students to register to vote, the event will be free and open to the public.
The community fair will feature brief remarks from elected officials including Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert. San Antonio and the Bexar County Commissioner’s Court have filed proclamations designating October 2 through October 6 as High School Voter Registration week to demonstrate the City and County’s commitments to promote civic leadership among high school and college-aged students.
Attendees are encouraged to visit Texas Secretary of State officials, who will be stationed in the Durango Building’s Alamo Boardroom (DB 1.122), for a printout of an Election Identification Certificate (EIC).
Nonpartisan experiential learning activities will be held by Bexar County Elections, the LWV and other community organizations in the Riverwalk Room (DB 1.124). The exercises will familiarize students with the voter registration and the election process.
To further familiarize participants with the voting process, the LWV will present its nonpartisan voting guide to familiarize new voters with how to interpret information on Bexar County voter ballots for the upcoming uniform election on Tuesday, November 7. Sample ballots will also be available.
Journalists from the San Antonio Express-News and the San Antonio Report will be present to discuss media literacy and balanced news consumption in the Durango Building La Villita Room (DB 1.116).
Community and municipal organizations will be present to share various ways young students can become civically engaged whether serving on a commission with the City of San Antonio, working with the Parks and Recreation department to identify amenities and programs for a park, signing up to be a poll worker during an election, working with the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy & Educational Foundation to coordinate the Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice or volunteering at the annual Yes We CAN food drive held in partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank.
San Anto Cultural Arts will be on-site screening images onto t-shirts to commemorate this inaugural event, and ArtPace’s Teen Council will have a ‘zine (magazine) activity.
Additionally, attendees will have an opportunity to anonymously share the barriers and apprehension they experience or anticipate when participating in the electoral process by writing their fears on large note sheets that will be posted on the walls of La Villita Room. Giveaways will also be available.
Registration is required and can be completed on the UTSA Engaged website. Free parking will be available in unmarked commuter spaces in the Durango Lot at the corner of S. Pecos-La Trinidad and W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.
