NOVEMBER 2, 2023 — UTSA is committed to making a college degree more accessible and affordable so students can focus on pursuing bold futures rather than overcoming financial hurdles.
The UTSA Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships awards nearly $300 million in financial aid each year. During the 2022-2023 academic year, the university managed a portfolio of more than 450 scholarships totaling $5.6 million. This added funding benefitted more than 3,300 students, with scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $15,000.
New and current students can use the UTSA Scholarship Hub to apply for scholarships for the 2024-2025 school year. The hub streamlines the application process by using a single application, which will automatically evaluate eligibility across the large pool of available scholarships. Additionally, students will see more scholarship opportunities based on their profile, which could require supplementary materials like an essay. Scholarship availability ranges based on academic status, enrolled major, financial need and more.
"The Scholarship Hub was a game-changer for me as a first-generation college student,” says Madeline Escalera, a senior majoring in public health. “It provided me with a seamless and stress-free experience in securing my scholarship. I am incredibly thankful that I didn't have to go through the hassle of completing numerous applications. With just one form, I was awarded the scholarship, which was a tremendous help in financing my education. The Scholarship Hub made my journey to higher education so much smoother and accessible."
Separate from the hub, new incoming students who display exceptional academic achievements may automatically qualify for a distinguished scholarship. The Distinguished Presidential Scholarship is available to incoming freshman and is valued at up to $20,000 for up to four years. The Distinguished Transfer Scholarshipis valued at up to $6,000 for up to two years. Students must maintain renewal eligibility for both scholarships, which is based on academic performance rather than financial need.
In addition to applying for scholarships, UTSA financial aid experts recommend that prospective and returning students complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which opens December 2023. Upcoming changes to this program are making the process easier for students and providing them with more opportunities to become eligible for federal aid.
“UTSA is committed to affordability,” said Erika Cox, UTSA assistant vice provost and executive director of financial aid and scholarships. “Programs like our UTSA Bold Promise assist over 2,000 currently enrolled students, and the upcoming changes to the FAFSA will mean easier filing and more students being eligible for the federal Pell Grant.”
The priority deadline for the scholarship application is January 15, 2024. Other UTSA scholarships and external scholarships may have varying deadlines, so the university encourages students to confirm deadlines with each respective application source.
Cox’s most important advice: Check back regularly on the UTSA Scholarship Hub, as new scholarship opportunities are continually added.
