SEPTEMBER 13, 2024 — UTSA is proud to announce a series of programs that will honor the history, vibrance and contributions of Latino communities in the United States during Hispanic Heritage Month. Recognized nationally each year from September 15 to October 15, the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at UTSA will kick off a day early on Saturday, September 14, with the Dieciséis de Septiembre Parade.
As a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution that embraces its Hispanic identity, UTSA is proud to feature a variety of Hispanic Heritage Month events that showcase the diverse cultural heritage of Hispanic communities, including festivals, concerts and theater performances rooted in Mexican and Latin American themes. These events offer students, faculty, staff and the San Antonio community enriching opportunities to immerse themselves in Hispanic culture alongside their fellow Roadrunners.
Here's a preview of several notable Hispanic Heritage Month events being hosted by UTSA. All of them are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Dieciséis de Septiembre Parade
10 to 11:30 a.m. • UTSA Westside Community Center
Sponsored by the Avenida Guadalupe Association, this parade serves as an annual community celebration of Mexico’s historic independence from Spanish rule. Parade-goers are invited to bring their fold-out chairs and sun umbrellas and set up early along El Parian and Plaza Guadalupe. UTSA’s Westside Community Center — located at the parade’s starting location at Guadalupe and Brazos streets — will be open to visitors for the duration of the event.
Rio Bravo
7:30 p.m. • Buena Vista Theater, UTSA Downtown Campus
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will present this special 30th anniversary production of “Rio Bravo” featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company and Mariachi Azteca de América for two nights at the UTSA Downtown Campus. When the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center premiered “Rio Bravo” in July 1994, it played to sold-out houses at the Carver Theatre and became a signature piece for the Guadalupe Dance Company’s repertoire. “Rio Bravo” is a captivating performance that unfolds through five chronological suites of dance, showcasing the vibrant music and dance traditions of the Texas-Mexico border region. This unique production takes audiences on a journey through time, exploring the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions of the area. Tickets for the event start at $30.
UTSA Football Hispanic Heritage Game
2:30 p.m. • Alamodome
Cheer on the Roadrunners as they take on Houston Christian University in UTSA’s final non-conference battle of the season. This game will feature a special halftime show with Ballet Folklórico Sol de San Antonio and Mariachi Los Paisanos performing with the Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band. Tickets for the game start at $21.
Mariachi Los Paisanos Concert
7:30 p.m. • UTSA Recital Hall, UTSA Main Campus
Mariachi Los Paisanos and Mariachi Juvenil de UTSA are excited to announce their inaugural fall recital. Mariachi Los Paisanos traces its ties to the heart of San Antonio’s Hispanic cultural identity through traditional instrumentation, songs and trajes (suits). The mariachi ensemble frequently performs throughout the 210 and is well-known for its energetic performances at UTSA’s Commencement ceremonies. On this evening, the ensemble will prepare a program of exceptional mariachi music to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Spanish Harlem OrchestraInternational Latin Jazz & Arts Festival
Noon to 11 p.m. • Bill Miller Plaza, UTSA Downtown Campus
This inaugural “pachanga to remember” will celebrate the sounds, taste, art and culture of all things Latin at San Antonio’s newest signature Hispanic Heritage Month event. Proudly sponsored in part by UTSA, the International Latin Jazz & Arts Festival will boast a full lineup of live music, Latin cuisine, exhibitors and dance and music workshops. The world-famous, Grammy-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra will headline the event. The festival will kick off with the SOFTA (Starlite Organization for the Arts) Latin Music Symposium, where kids ages four to 11 will learn about the basics of Afro-Cuban rhythm and other instruments often used in Latin jazz. At the end of the evening, the festival will give way to “El Gran Baile,” an afterparty featuring some of Texas’ best DJs in the Latino music scene.
Oswaldo Zapata CorreaA Tour of Hispanic Music
7:30 p.m. • UTSA Recital Hall, UTSA Main Campus
This recital will showcase a variety of Hispanic music from Spain and Latin America. The evening’s entertainment will include pieces by UTSA’s own Mariachi Los Paisanos and UTSA faculty like Oswaldo Zapata Correa, assistant professor of trumpet and the university’s brass area coordinator.
UTSA Jazz Ensemble Concert
7:30 p.m. • UTSA Recital Hall, UTSA Main Campus
The UTSA Jazz Ensemble specializes in the performance of various streams of jazz, including music for stage bands and vocal jazz groups. This program will feature music dedicated to Hispanic Heritage Month.
