UTSA celebrates longstanding international partnership to advance student success

OCTOBER 4, 2024 — UTSA and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), the largest university in Latin America, have a long history of transnational collaboration. Since 1992, UNAM has been UTSA’s sole international partner with a physical presence in San Antonio.

Located in Hemisfair, UNAM San Antonio focuses on teaching, research and cultural exchange. It serves as a conduit between Mexican culture and diverse academic and public organizations, drawing on the resources of UNAM Mexico City.

To commemorate its 80 years in San Antonio, UNAM hosted a reception recently with local, state, national and international leaders. Then, UTSA hosted a signing ceremony with UTSA President Taylor Eighmy and UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomeli Vanegas to renew the institution’s international cooperation agreement with UNAM. The ceremony served as an important step as the two universities work to explore creating a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course in artificial intelligence for the 2024-2025 school year, which will extend opportunities for intercultural and transnational learning for students enrolled in both institutions.

“Our collaboration with UNAM San Antonio has been valuable to students and the community. With our renewed agreement, we look forward to new collaborations in the areas of AI and quantum.”

Tamara Martinez, director of secretaría de desarrollo institucional UNAM (SDI); Dr. Guadalupe "Lupita" Carmona, UTSA professor, executive Director of ConTex, interdisciplinary learning and teaching; Dr. Catalina E. Stern Forgach, director UNAM Tucson and Ms. Carelli De la Garza Torres, associate director for global engagement of UTSA

“We are grateful to the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico for its continued leadership and partnership as we foster existing and create new opportunities for transnational learning that will build bridges between the two countries to advance cultural exchanges and career opportunities for students in the United States and in Mexico,” said Eighmy. “I’m confident our students will continue to advance knowledge through this critical partnership and look forward to the ongoing success it will bring both our students and universities at large.”

UNAM and UTSA often collaborate through the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), which aims to enhance degree completion, advance research and increase engagement. Through these collaborations, both institutions are supporting their shared goals to advance public research universities.

For example, in October 2023, UNAM and UTSA jointly celebrated the work of Juan O’Gorman, a prominent Mexican architect and artist. Events included scholarly presentations, a public colloquium, a light show of O’Gorman’s works and an Altar de Muertos. UNAM San Antonio showcased five animated videos of O’Gorman’s work, created by UNAM graduate Abel Zúñiga.

“Our collaboration with UNAM San Antonio has been valuable to students and the community. With our renewed agreement, we look forward to new collaborations in the areas of AI and quantum,” said Lisa Montoya, UTSA vice provost for Global Initiatives. “Working with UNAM allows us the opportunity to work across Mexico on issues important to all of North America.”

UNAM was founded on September 21, 1551, and is the largest university in Mexico and Latin America. In 1944, the university extended its presence beyond national borders to the United States. With support from the community, the Mexican government and the City of San Antonio, UNAM inaugurated its new facilities in Hemisfair in 1986.

Through strategic partnerships forged across five continents, UTSA Global oversees 120 international agreementsspanning 29 countries and 87 institutions. From the Nordic region to Latin America, this expansive global footprint is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence on a world stage.

UTSA’s international partnerships produce educational, research, cultural and experiential opportunities for its students and faculty and provide the same broadening experiences for international Roadrunners on campus in the United States. Equally as important, UTSA’s commitment to internationalization and multiculturalism is supporting the university’s advancement as a Tier One research university and a Hispanic Serving Institution that provides access to educational excellence and prepares citizen leaders for the global environment.
