JANUARY 21, 2025 — UTSA continues to excel in fully online education, ranking No. 71 of 350 ranked institutions in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list of Best Online Programs. UTSA remains in the top 22% of all programs in the nation and has ranked among the top 100 for three consecutive years.
“Our 100% online programs empower students to take control of their education,” said Suzana Diaz Rosencrans, UTSA assistant vice provost for online programs and director of online enrollment, marketing and advising. “At UTSA, we’ve created an additional pathway for students who may not be able to fit a traditional in-person education into their lives because of personal or professional responsibilities.”
To create its annual list, U.S. News & World Report ranks institutions in several categories: engagement, services and technologies, faculty credentials and training and peer assessment, evaluated by high-ranking academic officials and employers.
“In addition to creating programs that fill a critical need in the marketplace, we’re also integrating evidence-based instructional design practices into these courses to ensure our non-traditional students are successful,” said Melissa Vito, UTSA vice provost for academic innovation. “Our intentional approach helps these students advance in their current work, complete degrees or pursue new academic areas to assist them in their career progression.”
UTSA’s fully online program development process, aligned with Academic Innovation’s Office of Teaching, Learning & Digital Transformation (TLDT), creates a high-quality education tailored for adult learners in a fully online environment. The department leverages innovative teaching methods, faculty development programs, personalized academic support and cutting-edge digital tools. UTSA’s approach was recognized in December 2024 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
UTSA serves a diverse population of learners who benefit from the flexibility of a fully online education. Online students are distinctive from many of their peers who attend classes on UTSA’s campuses. Of fully online students:
Also, nearly 10% of UTSA fully online students are military-affiliated, a point of pride for the university. San Antonio is nationally recognized as Military City USA.
In addition to the overall online bachelor’s degree, UTSA also landed at No. 37 of 98 institutions that have been recognized as Best Online Programs for Veterans. U.S. News & World Report ranked fully online bachelor programs for veterans by considering each institution's overall rank, the availability of GI Bill or Yellow Ribbon funding, and whether the institution provides maximum Yellow Ribbon funding for tuition costs remaining after Post-9/11 GI Bill funds are applied.
Military-affiliated students can find comprehensive support at the UTSA Center for Military Affiliated students (CMAS). The UTSA CMAS offers resources like the Veterans Certification Office and provides critical links to Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and health services in a convenient, one-stop setting.
UTSA’s fully online programs provide opportunities for learners to gain the skills they need, when they need them, to create better lives for themselves and their families. UTSA Online’s innovative courses, robust support systems, and focus on quality and affordability ensure education remains accessible to all.
With more than 1,100 students enrolled in Fall 2024, UTSA Online’s steady growth reflects the university’s strategic investments in high-demand fields such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science. The creation of UTSA’s new College of AI, Cyber and Computing, along with its planned integration with UT Health San Antonio, will further expand the reach and impact of UTSA over the course of 2025 and beyond.
“Returning to school has been a journey of self-discovery and it’s taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone,” said Brenda Davila, who completed the fully online B.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies in 2024. “Education has transformed my life and I’m excited to see how I can use what I’ve learned to make a positive impact in my community.”
