UTSA students can participate in meaningful student employment and internship opportunities throughout Business Affairs. Our career-engaged learning opportunities align closely with the Business Affairs strategic pathways to cultivate an inspiring and empowering workplace and connect and engage with our community.
Student Employment
Business Affairs includes six major service areas: Administration and Operations, Campus Services, Facilities, Financial Affairs, Public Safety, and Real Estate, Construction and Planning. Our student employees are valued team members, and over 100 students participate in student employment and internship experiences throughout our service areas each academic year.

Internship Experiences
Through our internship opportunities, Business Affairs builds meaningful connections with UTSA students and provides valuable career-engaged learning opportunities that support students’ academic curriculum. Recent interns have been from the departments of Communication, Public Administration, Construction Science and Management, and Criminology and Criminal Justice.
Internship opportunities are posted on Handshake and interested students are highly encouraged to apply. Internship experiences within Business Affairs offer hands-on learning, mentorship, and valuable opportunities for students to network both internally within the university and externally within the larger San Antonio community.
Business Affairs Communications Academy
Business Affairs is proud to launch a Communications Academy during the fall 2024 semester. This unique opportunity is a paid training program for undergraduate students. Participants will benefit from 13 weeks of hands-on training during the fall semester facilitated by members of the professional staff on the Business Affairs Strategic Communications team. Throughout the semester, students will strengthen valuable skills in writing, social media management, basic graphic design, web edits, photography, videography, and more.
At the end of the semester, successful candidates will be offered continued student employment in Business Affairs. We are hiring five undergraduate student employees for the initial program cohort, as well as a UTSA graduate assistant to help support students in the program. What is the difference between student employment and internships?
Student employment refers to the hiring and administration of temporary part-time jobs for UTSA students to work on campus. This includes all student employee positions, including work-study positions. An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships are closely aligned with a student’s major and have clearly defined learning objectives. What is work-study and how can I be considered?
The Federal Work-Study Program offers eligible students the chance to earn college funds by working a part-time job on campus or in community service agencies. Interested students can contact One Stop Enrollment - Financial Aid for more details.

The University Career Center assists students in any phase of their career journey, including: Career Assessment, Career Exploration and Planning, Resume / Cover Letter Review, Interview Prep, Professional Networking Assistance, Graduate or Professional School Assistance, Internship / Job Search Assistance, and Professional Headshots.

Student Success Stories
Katherine Erowele - Administration and Operations
Katherine Erowele served as a Process Improvement Intern with UTSA’s Business Affairs Administration and Operations. Since transferring to UTSA in Spring 2023 to pursue a degree in Health Communications with a minor in Marketing, Katherine has worked on projects to improve organizational efficiency. Her contributions include creating training diagrams and work structure breakdowns while developing skills in data analysis, visualization, and collaboration.
This internship introduced Katherine to business processes, administration, and finance, inspiring her career goals in consulting and an MBA. Through hands-on experience and teamwork, she gained a deeper appreciation for operational excellence.
Julia Spanos - Department of Public Safety
Since joining UTSA’s Department of Public Safety as a Marketing and Communications Intern in January 2024, Julia Spanos has strengthened community connections and elevated the department’s social media presence. She developed brand guidelines, improved photo quality, organized a content calendar, and utilized Meta Business Suite, boosting engagement among students and staff.
Julia also organized events like Coffee with a Cop, partnering with Dutch Bros to encourage student interaction and grow the department’s social media following. By analyzing metrics, she expanded their digital reach while fostering an inclusive online community. Julia looks forward to applying her skills in social media and digital marketing after graduating in December 2024.
Xavier Martinez – Financial Affairs
Xavier Martinez completed an internship with the Surplus Property department of UTSA’s Financial Affairs in fall 2024. With his former military experience and as a business student majoring in Operations and Supply Chain Management, Xavier gained valuable logistics and inventory management experience in the higher education industry. Through streamlining surplus asset management processes, he assisted the Surplus department to incur significant cost savings and improve efficiency.
This internship experience helped Xavier strengthen practical skills including critical thinking, communication, and collaboration which he will continue to develop as he begins the UTSA M.B.A program.
Business Affairs Communications Academy
The Office of the Vice President for Business Affairs launched a pilot program in fall 2024, the Business Affairs Communications Academy. Nancy Garcia, Larry Holmes, Daniela Nanez, and Miranda Vasquez successfully completed a semester-long training program facilitated by the Business Affairs Strategic Communications team. With the support of Graduate Assistant, Madeline Hernandez, the students developed digital communications skills in technical writing, graphic design, photography, web development, and more.
The high performing group of student employees will continue strengthening their divisional knowledge and digital communications skills as they continue working with the Business Affairs Strategic Communications team.
Brianna Reed - Department of Public Safety
As a Criminal Justice intern in UTSA’s Department of Public Safety, Brianna Reed worked with the Criminal Investigation team and gained experience managing investigations from start to finish.
Brianna also had the opportunity to strengthen community relations by collaborating with UTSA students, faculty and staff, as well as external agencies including the San Antonio Police Department and Secret Service. This internship helped to develop valuable leadership, communication, and teamwork skills that Brianna looks forward to carrying with her as she pursues a law degree after graduating in December 2024.
