UTSAPD and Partners Highlight Dangers of Impaired Driving

Dangers of ImpairmentThe UTSA Police Department (UTSAPD) teamed up with U in the Driver Seat and UTSA Wellbeing Services to host an interactive event focused on sober driving and personal safety ahead of spring break. Held on Wednesday, March 5, in the Student Union Window Lounge, the event gave students a firsthand look at the dangers of impaired driving and provided important safety resources.

Students had the opportunity to experience virtual reality drunk driving simulations and test their coordination while wearing impairment goggles. These hands-on activities highlighted just how much alcohol can impact reaction time and decision-making. Officers were also on hand to discuss real-life consequences of driving under the influence and share tips for staying safe during spring break.

“We want students to make smart, safe choices,” said UTSAPD Chief Stephanie Schoenborn. “By participating in events like this, we’re able to start important conversations about the risks of impaired driving and personal safety. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe both on and off campus.”

The event was part of a larger effort to educate students about available support and services. Stay Roadrunner Safe is a campuswide effort to create awareness about free safety resources available on campus through Public Safety.

Working together with UTSA Wellbeing Services, off-campus organizations, and local and state agencies, UTSAPD supports the effort to ensure students are aware of important alcohol and drug safety resources, including free counseling, anonymous screenings and recovery support groups. Along with its partners, UTSAPD aims to equip students with the tools they need to make responsible decisions and look out for one another.
