Día en la Sombrilla brings Fiesta spirit to UTSA

Music, dancers, food booths and confetti will fill the Sombrilla and Central Plazas of the UTSA Main Campus for the beloved campus tradition Día en la Sombrilla from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19. The annual celebration benefits student organizations and embraces the spirit of Fiesta San Antonio's efforts to “Party with a Purpose.”

The UTSA and San Antonio communities are invited to join the free, family-friendly event, featuring live music from UTSA Mariachi Los Paisanos and entertainment by DJ Gumby.

Día en la Sombrilla will feature a vibrant atmosphere with more than 45 registered student organizations selling food, drinks and other items to raise funds for professional development, events, and recognition activities. UTSA Fiesta medals will be available for purchase and cascarones will be given to students throughout the event.

Meanwhile, the UTSA University College uses the event as an experiential learning opportunity for students of the Academic Inquiry and Scholarship curriculum. During the spring semester, students create a business plan for products they will sell at the annual event. After Día en la Sombrilla, they measure the success of their plan. The money they raise will fund course activities for the next semester.

“This event is beloved by students, faculty, staff, and the community,” said Chantea` Swinson-Rhoe, director of the UTSA Student Involvement Center. “Student organization leaders who help coordinate participation in Día en la Sombrilla and the members who staff booths at the event are raising funds to support their goals while developing their leadership and professional skills.”

Día en la Sombrilla debuted in 1978 as Fiesta UTSA and has since become an official Fiesta San Antonio event. It is hosted by Roadrunner Productions, a sponsored student organization focused on fostering and building traditions and community through campus-wide programs, activities and special events.
